The European People’s Party (EPP) has proposed this idea, arguing that health issues are not adequately addressed within the current ENVI committee, which also covers environmental and food safety matters. Supporters, like MEP Tomislav Sokol, believe a dedicated health committee would better tackle public health challenges. 🏥
However, opponents, including members of other political groups, opine that separating health from related sectors could undermine the cross-sectoral nature of public health – the so-called ‘One Health’ approach which connects human, animal, and environmental health. What’s more, some believe that this concept is best implemented in the current ENVI committee, which includes the Subcommittee on Public Health.
Given the full-packed healthcare agenda, including the pharmaceutical package envisaged for discussion in the upcoming European Parliament sessions, it is crucial to prioritize health issues.
Should health stand alone, or stay integrated with environment & food safety? The debate continues! 🤔
