“Unfortunately, we are witnessing that many nicotine-containing products available on the market fall outside our legislative control. First, the composition of these products; second, their quality; and third, their availability. There are no regulations to govern this”

said Prof. Marek Postuła, head of the Pharmacogenomics Laboratory at the Medical University of Warsaw and a member of the Polish Society of Longevity Medicine, regarding the fight against nicotine abuse. “We need to look at what’s happening globally, particularly in terms of responding to nicotine use among children and adolescents.” The expert emphasized that this situation must change, as all EU countries are obligated to reduce tobacco smoking to 5% of the adult population by 2040. So far, only Sweden has achieved this goal. “In Poland, this rate stands at 30% (…) Many products available on our market contain nicotine and serve as an initiation into nicotine use for young people.

We need to consider primarily economic solutions. The European Society of Cardiology has repeatedly emphasized in its guidelines, particularly preventive ones, that only economic factors will force us to quit smoking. Tax policy is also very inconsistent, as these products often carry much lower tax burdens.”

The conference “The Road to the Presidency: Prevention and Public Health in the Program of the Polish Presidency of the EU Council” was held in December last year.
