Ensuring uninterrupted access to essential medicines for all EU citizens is of utmost importance. Poland, like other EU Member States, faces medicine shortages, a challenge exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. To solve the issue, the EU authorities have put this topic high on the priority agenda. The importance of the Critical Medicines Act, which aims to reduce dependencies on critical medicines and their ingredients, has also been emphasized in the European Commission’s Political Guidelines for 2024-2029. Earlier, to better tackle medicine shortages, the Critical Medicines Alliance (CMA) was established in January 2024. CMA is a consultative platform that brings together key stakeholders from Member States, relevant industries, civil society representatives, and academia.
Given these important developments, we are extremely enthused to announce that recently the Institute for Social Policy Development (IRSS) has officially joined the Critical Medicines Alliance (CMA), marking another important achievement and embarking on a new level of cooperation. Throughout our various initiatives, expert workshops, and conferences dedicated to shaping healthcare policy in Poland and the EU, we have been consistently raising this issue not only from the Polish perspective but also from the European one.
We believe that Poland possesses the untapped potential to positively influence European medicine safety. We are pleased that the Polish government has also joined the Alliance, underscoring its dedication to addressing critical healthcare needs.
Stay tuned for more updates as we start working on this incredible initiative.
