At the center of attention is Olivér Várhelyi – the new Commissioner-designate for Health and Animal Welfare from Hungary. While his competencies are recognized, numerous doubts have arisen regarding his insufficient experience in the health sector. This situation gains additional significance in the context of Hungary’s controversial presidency of the EU Council under Viktor Orbán’s leadership.
In the mission letter from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, two main priorities were outlined for the new Commissioner-designate for Health:
💊 Critical Medicines Act: Addressing shortages of crucial medicines and medical devices, as well as reducing dependencies on third countries related to them.
📜⚖️ Pharmaceutical Law Reform: Finalizing and overseeing the implementation of key reforms in pharmaceutical law.
The effectiveness of Hungary’s actions in implementing these initiatives will be of significant importance for Poland, which will assume the EU Council Presidency in January 2025.
The ability to cooperate between Hungary and Poland, as well as other countries preparing to take over the presidency, will play a crucial role in shaping EU health policy. It’s worth following the development of these events. 🤔
