Worldwide, there is a growing epidemic of heart failure – currently, there are about 12 million patients with cardiac issues in Europe, approximately one and a half million of whom live in Poland. It is the most common and costly cause of hospitalization, and the 5-year survival rate is lower than, for instance, lung cancer survival – said Prof. Dr. hab. n. med. Ryszard Piotrowicz from the Committee on Clinical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Commission for e-Health, Telemedicine, and Artificial Intelligence of the Polish Cardiac Society during a presentation.
“Only a small percentage of patients in Europe, just a dozen or so percent, have access to cardiac rehabilitation. The answer to this issue is home rehabilitation and the use of telemedicine. In Poland, it has been incorporated into the standards of the Polish Cardiac Society. Surprisingly, this was followed by regulations from the Minister of Health and the President of the National Health Fund. In the whole of Europe, only Poland has done this – we became the first country in the world to finance hybrid rehabilitation. This allows us to rehabilitate a patient anywhere in the world. It is a model example of telemedicine implementation that we can showcase in Europe.”
Prof. Ryszard Piotrowicz’s presentation took place during the November conference “The Road to Presidency: Digital Transformation in Medicine and Healthcare” at the Medical University of Warsaw. The event was organized by the Institute for the Development of Social Affairs.
The initiative was funded by the National Institute of Freedom – Center for the Development of Civil Society through the Civic Initiatives Fund Program NOWEFIO for 2021–2030.
