The ban on tanning salons for those under 18, the Medical Fund, and the draft bill on specialized geriatric care — Andrzej Duda has achieved more in public health than his predecessors. The President vetoed the reduction of the health contribution for entrepreneurs and proposed several successful legislative initiatives.

Healthcare through the expert’s lens

In the latest issue of Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, Jakub Gołąb, President of the Institute for Social Policy Development, reviews the actions of the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, in the field of public health.

Particularly noteworthy initiatives include:

• A law prohibiting minors from using tanning beds and introducing penalties for owners, who permit it. This measure contributes to melanoma prevention.
• The 2020 Medical Fund Act, which offers hope to patients who previously could not access expensive and innovative therapies. It provides funding for treatment of rare diseases, especially for pediatric and oncology patients.

The 2019 National Oncology Strategy, considered one of the successes of the President of the Republic of Poland, was meant to be a response to the increasing number of cancer cases in Poland. “The Act on the National Oncology Network had ambitious goals and set directions for necessary actions, but it was not a major breakthrough in the systemic fight against the cancer epidemic in Poland,” notes President Jakub Gołąb.
