Movember Campaign – November as Men’s Health Month. Grow a mustache and get checked

It is estimated that one in three men aged 50 to 80, and 80% of men over 80, will develop prostate cancer. The risk increases with age and affects men after the age of 45. Prostate cancer consistently ranks as the 4th leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide – reports the portal zwrotnikraka.pl.

Prostate – an important small gland

The prostate is located beneath the bladder. It produces fluid that is part of semen, playing a crucial role in male fertility and sexual function.

With age, the prostate may enlarge, leading to problems with urination. Symptoms that should prompt a visit to a urologist include: frequent urination, difficulty urinating, erectile dysfunction, pain in the perineum or testicles that worsens during urination, and blood visible in urine or semen.

Prostate cancer can sometimes be symptomless

Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men in Poland and one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths. According to the National Cancer Registry, more than 17,000 Polish men are diagnosed with it every year.

In its early stages, the disease often shows no symptoms. That is why regular preventive examinations are so important, especially after the age of 45 (or after 40 if there is a family history of prostate cancer).

What does a prostate exam involve?

PSA test – a simple blood test that measures the level of prostate-specific antigen. Elevated results may indicate inflammation, enlargement, or cancer of the prostate.

Digital rectal exam (DRE) – a physical examination of the prostate through the rectum. Although it may feel uncomfortable, it lasts only a few seconds and is one of the most effective methods for early detection of changes.

If abnormalities are found, the urologist may order further tests such as ultrasound, MRI, or biopsy.

In November, grow a mustache and get checked!

Movember (in Polish: Wąsopad) is a unique campaign during which men around the world grow mustaches to highlight the importance of preventive health care, especially regarding prostate and testicular cancer. The goal is to encourage men to take care of themselves through regular check-ups, a healthy diet, and physical activity.

Movember unites millions of people worldwide. In Poland, footballer Robert Lewandowski has joined the campaign, reminding us:

“In sports we learn to fight, to take care of our body and fitness. But true strength also means caring for your health, for yourself and for others.”

How to take part in Movember?

It’s simple:

Grow a mustache

Schedule preventive exams such as PSA or ultrasound

Learn how to perform self-examinations of the testicles

Don’t postpone your doctor’s visit. Talk to your loved ones. Join the campaign. Encourage others to undergo preventive check-ups. Do it for yourself, your family, and your health.
