Polish Presidency in the EU 2025: Health and Safety as Foundations for the Future

On February 21, 2025, a conference titled “Path to Presidency” took place, dedicated to Poland’s health-related priorities in the context of its upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union. During the event, a White Paper was presented, containing expert recommendations and proposals for actions aimed at improving healthcare systems across the Union.

The conference brought together a broad range of experts, policymakers, and practitioners, including representatives from the European Commission, the World Health Organization (WHO), academia, and civil society organizations. The event was inaugurated by Małgorzata Bogusz, President of the Institute for Social Policy Development Among the honorary speakers was Oliver Röpke, President of the European Economic and Social Committee.

A New Institutional Impulse
The first panel addressed the role of the Polish Presidency as the beginning of a new institutional cycle for health policy in the EU. Key speeches were delivered by, among others, Dr. Adam Jarubas (European Parliament) and Sandra Gallina from the European Commission. The discussion focused on the need to harmonize health policies and improve cross-border cooperation.

Prevention and Health Education
The second panel highlighted the role of prevention and health education as fundamental elements of health security. Experts, including representatives from the WHO, emphasized the need for systemic actions that include chronic disease prevention, the promotion of healthy lifestyles, and education from an early age.

Europe’s Pharmaceutical Security
The third panel discussed the critical importance of pharmaceutical security. Experts agreed that the COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in medicine and medical device supply chains. The need to strengthen local production and strategic stockpiles was strongly emphasized.

Women’s Health in the Spotlight
The next panel focused on women’s health as a key component of preventive care. Participants included both government representatives and social activists. The discussion pointed to the need for better access to healthcare services for women, comprehensive sex education, and support for mental and reproductive health.

Health Plans for Europe
The final panel of the day explored whether the European Beating Cancer Plan could serve as an inspiration for implementing similarly effective initiatives in other areas of medicine. Experts from across Europe called for the development of comparable strategies in fields such as rare diseases, neurology, and rheumatology.

A special guest at the event was Lech Wałęsa. The former President of Poland stressed the importance of solidarity and collective responsibility in building a healthy and safe Europe.

This event gathered many distinguished experts and figures from the worlds of science and politics. Their presence and contributions highlighted the significance of the topics discussed and served as an important message for further work and effective public health action across Europe.
