backThe European Health Data Space (EHDS) could be crucial for patients with rare diseases. Some countries are unable to support their patients because they lack the necessary resources, technology, or infrastructure
The idea behind the European digitalization of health data and its exchange between countries is to improve patients’ access to specialists and therapies by directing them to specialized centers. This could be key for patients in countries where access to treatment is limited and where, for various reasons, governments will not establish specialized centers for rare diseases anytime soon.
Data exchange could help refer such patients to centers that utilize all available treatment options. “Patients do not always have to come to the facility in person,” said Lech Pilawski, a member of the European Economic and Social Committee and an advisor to the President at Konfederacja Lewiatan, during his introduction to the panel on EU pharmaceutical security.
